Summary

This section starts with the same line about Asle looking at the purple and brown lines of the Saint Andrew's cross painting. He is in bed and does not want to wake up.

In a memory, young Asle is playing outside. His mother is upset and calls him inside, because she found the money the Bald Man gave him in the pocket of his pants when she did the washing. Asle lies and says he found the money on the ground, because he does not want to admit that he got it from the Bald Man, or tell his mother what the Bald Man did to him.
