Summary

In Part Two, Scene Sixteen, Tessa is cross-examined by Julian’s defence barrister. He attempts to make the argument that Tessa’s description of the way Julian was holding her down didn’t make sense. Tessa succeeds in outsmarting his argument, answering his questions in a way that affirms her version of events, rather than falling for his traps. The defence barrister suggests that Tessa wanted to sabotage Julian’s career because they were both on the shortlist for a bigger room in another chambers. Tessa is pleased to be able to undermine this argument by pointing out that, although someone else might have put her on the shortlist, she had never applied for the bigger room and never had any interest in doing so.
