Summary
Tessa goes to get lunch with a more senior colleague named Adam. They discuss a graduate who came to work for Tessa once who Tessa considered laughably naïve. While they were prepping for a case their client told them that he wanted to plead not guilty and the graduate, Sophie, asked him whether he actually committed the crime or not. Tessa and Adam laugh at the story. Tessa explained to Sophie that it’s not her job to find out the truth, it’s her job to represent the client and make the best possible case for whatever version of events they want to present in court. If a client pleading not guilty admitted to their barrister in private that they were guilty, that would affect what the barrister could say in court.
