Summary

In Chapter 22, Nan speaks to Pat and says that she rejected Pat’s proposal, as she has realized that her primary responsibility is to her son Pat. Pat decides to tell Nan about the fire, but before he can, two police officers enter the restaurant. Pat hands his phone to Nan just before the officers arrest him. Nan becomes distraught. Jimmy tells Nan that Pat burned down the Duck House. Annie goes out into the alley and begins crying; she is worried that she will be implicated in the crime. Nan sees her and believes that she is simply sad for Pat. Nan tries to comfort her. In Chapter 23, Johnny goes to the police station to make sure that the police do not mistreat Pat.
