Summary

Chapter 14 shifts focus to Jack. The narrative implies that Michelle is dying of cancer, but that neither Jack nor Michelle broach the subject, as the illness is beyond treating. One or two days after Michelle’s sudden departure from the house, she contacts Jack and reveals that she is now living at the house of a man named Gary, who is her lover. Gary is also a Chinese immigrant. Jack, Michelle, and Gary have a meal together. The atmosphere is mostly amicable. Jack does not try to protest Michelle’s new relationship, as Jack does not love Michelle or fell possessive of her. Also, he wants her to be happy in what are likely the final months of her life. However, Jack does feel somewhat betrayed, and to slightly spite Michelle, he hints at the possibility of a relationship between himself and Nan. Meanwhile...
