Summary

In Chapter Twenty-One, Chan describes the intensifying preparations at the family’s new business. He references Abogee’s anger at discovering that Bong had ordered pornographic magazines from a distributor, and Abogee’s determination that any of the family working there had to wear the official uniform, which Chan found uncomfortable and unattractive. Finally, on opening day, the store starts making sales, and the family starts making money.

In Chapter Twenty-Two, Chan and Young are working at the store. They deal with a couple of customers, and then, in a brief quiet period, Young asks Chan whether Abogee still has his gun. Chan explains in his narration that Abogee had bought a gun for protection in Los Angeles, but had never had to use it – not even, he tells Young, when the store was robbed.
