Summary

The play takes place in England and Geneva, Switzerland between 2006 and 2008. Act 1 begins with the scene “In The Beginning” which takes place in Luton, England in 2006. Sisters Alice (41) and Jenny (39) discuss the heavily pregnant Jenny’s reluctance to get an ultrasound because she has read that it can harm the baby. Alice tries to convince her that it is a safe and necessary procedure. As well as being fearful of getting an ultrasound, Jenny is also fearful that the baby isn’t kicking and might have the cord wrapped around its neck. Jenny becomes angry with Alice’s attempts to convince her that ultrasounds are safe and protests that she is in charge of what she does, not anyone else, which Alice agrees with. At the end of the scene, Jenny feels the baby kick.
