Narrator’s House
The narrator’s house is the main setting for the novel. It is changed by Sam’s departure. It remains the heart of the family for the children, especially Noah, who insists on returning there rather than to Sam’s apartment when he is injured. The narrator experiences the house as sad and empty when Noah and Lily are not there.
Oyster Bay House
The Oyster Bay House is owned by Sam’s parents and symbolizes his family wealth. The narrator has happy memories of time spent there with the children and is hurt by the thought that Maggie may now go there with Sam, Lily, and Noah.
Darlene’s House
The narrator occasionally visits the house of her friend Darlene to seek support over the divorce and cancer diagnosis.
