Summary

Sam suggested that they should treat the kids to a great day out at the Six Flags amusement park before telling them about their separation, in order to soften the blow. The narrator felt that Sam was trying to script their breakup and be the one in charge of how the story unfolded. She told Sam it was a bad idea to take the kids out for a treat before telling them and refused to do it, calling it “the dumbest idea ever”, surprising Sam (66). The narrator felt the urge to start a fight with Sam, perhaps by throwing and breaking things like a vase and a cup. She refrained and instead went through his socks and deliberately mismatched them, knowing this would irritate him and that he would also decide it was not worth confronting her over.
