Summary
After Sam revealed the affair, the narrator started to feel a pain in her chest, which she initially assumed was psychosomatic. However, when she got it checked out at the doctor’s it turned out to be cancer. The narrator recalls her mother, who died of breast cancer several years earlier. After her death, the narrator visited a bar they had been to together once, to remind her of happier times. She went to the bar three nights in a row and on the third night she met Sam. In the present day, one night before bed, instead of reading the children a story written by someone else, the narrator told Noah and Lily a Chinese myth about a tree on the moon. In the narration, she recalls her mother telling her that story in a hair salon when she was a child...
