Summary

The day of the narrator’s surgery arrived and it was a success. She told Sam and the kids that she was away with Darlene in Vermont and Darlene photoshopped pictures of them into the landscape to convince them they were really there. After the surgery, when Darlene fell asleep, the narrator photoshopped pictures of Maggie into her own wedding photos. Later, the narrator found a book of baby firsts, featuring things like their first teeth, and photographs of their first day of school. It suddenly hit her that she was now Sam’s first wife.

The narrator took a test which would reveal the likelihood of the cancer coming back. Her score was a medium level: not low enough to put her mind at ease but not high enough to justify alarm or immediate further treatment. The result made the narrator feel...
