Summary
In the narration, the narrator imagines all the directions her life might have taken if she had not married Sam. She concludes that she does not like thinking like this because she does not wish to imagine a life without Noah and Lily.
Sam’s mother, Mrs. Moore, called the narrator. The narrator could tell by the tone of her voice that she already knew about the separation. She was unprepared for how upset she would be to know that Mrs. Moore felt pity towards her. Mrs. Moore offered to have the children stay with them over the summer at the house in Oyster Bay and the narrator agreed. While the kids were away, they called the narrator every night to tell her stories about what they had done that day.
