Summary

In Chapter 8, Valora eats the welcome platter left in her room. She finds her belongings at the bottom of Mrs. Sloane's trunk, including a Bible that holds the only photograph of her parents. She knows her mother would not approve. She sleeps and dreams about her father in a tree, swarmed by bees. Jamie is nearby but does nothing. When she wakes, she admits to feeling lonely. She believes it is justified because of the recent years apart from Jamie. She can imagine her mother saying she and Jamie should not remain angry at each other and to always look forward.
