Davy

Davy Ross is the main character and first-person narrator. Throughout the novel he deals with challenging emotional issues related to the changes of adolescence and the loss of his grandmother. A central part of the plot involves his beginning to discover his sexuality through his attraction to Altschuler, a boy who becomes Davy’s best friend after Davy moves to New York to live with his mother following his grandmother’s death.

Davy finds it difficult to deal with and understand his emotions, due to his relative isolation and limited experience talking to other people about his feelings. His parents have been distant throughout much of his childhood, as Davy was raised by his grandmother starting at about the age of five and has had limited contact with them.
