Ben de Backer

Ben de Backer is the main character, protagonist, and narrator of this Novel. Ben a teenager who identifies their gender as non-binary, and who uses they/them pronouns. This means that Ben does not identify with either the male or female gender binary and does not feel completely at home in their body in the way it presents as male. Near the start of the novel, Ben comes out to their mom and dad as nonbinary, an identity for which he is completely shunned and rejected by his parents, and their parents kick them out of the house. Ben calls the only family they have, their sister Hannah, who left them alone with their parents ten years prior, leaving without notice or communication.
