The novel opens at the beginning of the summer after Arthur and Ben’s freshman years in college. They have not spoken since February. Ben learns that Arthur is coming back to New York for a Broadway internship. Arthur has a boyfriend named Mikey. Ben has a boyfriend named Mario.

As they’re moving in for the summer, Jessie runs into Ben and Dylan, then returns to the apartment where she’s staying with Arthur and tells him about it. A few days later, Ben ends up at the post office where he and Arthur met. He texts Arthur about it, and Arthur runs over, and they reunite. Then Mario shows up and Arthur leaves, and Ben tries not to get caught up in nostalgia.

Arthur has his first day of work. Ben sets up a triple date at Dave and Busters, but instead of Mikey coming with Arthur, Jessie does, and Ben realizes Mikey is not in New York with Arthur. Arthur sneaks away to call his best friend for reassurance. Arthur wins a bear for Dylan, then gives it to Mario instead.

Mario leaves for Los Angeles. Dylan and Samantha are busy. Ben makes plans to hang out with Arthur. They meet up at a tourist trap diner and reveal to one another that their new relationships are not as serious as once thought. Ben later meets up with Samantha and Dylan and talks about how he is feeling about Arthur.

Mikey comes to visit. Arthur avoids mentioning Ben until he’s forced to. They go out to meet up with Ben. Right before Ben arrives, Mikey confesses that he loves Arthur. They talk awkwardly over ice cream. When the outing is over, Arthur asks Ben to walk them home. Dylan orchestrates a meet-up. Dylan, Ben, and Mario go to Arthur’s apartment where Mikey is. Arthur drinks too much and gets sick.

Ben goes to Mario’s house one morning. Mario tells Ben that he cares about him, and that he might be leaving for LA. A few days later, while texting Ben, Arthur gets mistaken for texting his boyfriend at work. Ben wants to meet up and talk because he’s worried about Dylan. While at work, Ben calls Mario and reveals accidentally to his father that he is considering moving to LA with Mario. Ben asks Mario to meet his parents, and Mario agrees. When Ben and Arthur meet up, they walk and talk about the distance between them, and mutually share their woes. Arthur goes to Ben’s apartment and sees Diego and Isabel, who are happy to see him again. Arthur is having a nice time but leaves at the mention of Mario making dinner for their family. When Mario does, it all goes well.

Against Jessie’s wishes, Arthur meets up with Ben, as well as Dylan and Mario, at Bloomingdales. Mario reveals the news about Ben possibly moving to LA. A few days later, Ben meets up with Samantha and Dylan, who is not taking the news well. Samantha recommends they go out while they still can. Ben invites Arthur and Mario.

While at work, Arthur gets a call from Mikey, who invites Arthur to a wedding. Arthur declines because of work and hangs up. When he finds out that he can go, he still does not want to, and realizes that he is still in love with Ben. Arthur tries calling Mikey so they can break up. When he gets home, Mikey is there.

Samantha, Dylan, Ben, and Mario go out to an open mic night. Mario gets the news that he got a writing job in LA, so he is officially moving. Arthur and Mikey show up. Ben knows something is off between them, but Mikey performs a song for Arthur in front of everybody, and Ben assumes that that has fixed whatever is wrong between them, leaving him slightly heartbroken. That night, Arthur breaks up with Mikey, and Mikey is gone come morning.

A few days later, and Ben has not heard from Arthur. He wants to talk but does not know how to and fears losing him all over again. Arthur only tells his immediate circle about breaking up with Mikey. Ethan shows up by surprise in New York. Ethan comes out to Arthur, and they plan to go to New York Pride.

Ben and his friends go to pride as well. It is a wonderful day. Ben sees Arthur at pride and feels hopeful, but those hopes are crushed when he sees Ethan, who he thinks is Mikey, with Arthur. Arthur is sad when Ethan leaves. Arthur helps with a breakthrough at work, and he feels confident. Dylan invites Arthur to hang out but he refuses.

During an escape room, Dylan reveals to Ben that Samantha is pregnant and they’re planning a surprise wedding, which is why things have been strange. Ben and Arthur reconnect over the news. Ben admits to Mario that he is having doubts about Los Angeles.

Arthur goes to Ben’s apartment, for what he thinks might be the last time they will be alone together. Arthur gives Ben a ticket to a dress rehearsal of the play. Arthur confesses his love for Ben, then leaves. Ben considers his feelings and talks to his parents.

On the day of the dress rehearsal, Arthur is still waiting on a reply from Ben, and is sure Ben will not come to the performance. Ben goes to see his ex-boyfriend Hudson, then goes and breaks up with Mario. Ben goes to the performance, and after that they get back together. They agree to be dates to Dylan’s wedding.
