Summary

Chapter 10 is titled “Freedom of the Press.” The events of this novel take place in Westfield, described as a small, quiet town. The newspaper is the Westfield Gazette. Jude Morgan is the reporter. She seldom has an exciting story to report. Another gazette employee with a fourth grade daughter tells Judy about the uproar over a “code word.” Judy's only other assignment at that moment was a story about new trees being planted on Main Street, so she was happy to find something a little more interesting. Outside Mrs. Chatham's office, she finds the bulletin Mrs. Granger posted warning against using the word. The secretary directs Judy to Mrs. Chatham who clearly does not want to talk about it.
