Summary

Chapter 20 is titled “Ace of Spades.” Reverend Wolff counts those who emerge from the lodge. When he discovers Ivy and Cecile are not present, he wants to go back in. The explosion happens in the office at that moment, and a man holds Wolff back as the walls begin to collapse. Joan feels unprepared for the entire situation. Wolff tries to walk away with the others, but he is “stopped by an unseen barrier” (261). Joan realizes the bone salt has him trapped, meaning he is a rogarou. Wolff seems uncertain. Joan slips the ace of spades into his shirt and convinces him to follow her through the woods to the Jeep. She guides his hand under her skirt. His breathing becomes ragged, but Heiser interrupts.
