Summary

Chapter 17 is titled “Wolves in the South.” Cecile had wanted to travel south, but she is annoyed at the “cheesy off-the-grid community lodge … somewhere near the US border in the middle of a national park” (226). She is annoyed that there is only office other than the main room. She lays claim to the office, determined to hold onto her position of authority. Cecile is annoyed at Ivy and her young friend, but “A part of Cecile still wanted to feel this joyous over the small crumbs life offered” (227). Reverend Wolff greets Cecile so that she briefly hopes that things will go back to normal, but she has changed. She now realizes that a relationship with God is more important than Wolff.
