Chapter 3, The Second Day Summary and Analysis

The next morning, Ms. Eadie woke and began to think about another time in which she was in the hospital. It was shortly after Joe retired from the Air Force, and the family moved to the Northwest. Ms. Eadie found out she was pregnant although she and Joe had taken precautions against such an event. In the third month Ms. Eadie began to experience bleeding. In the hospital, the doctors told her she was passing fetal material and was having a miscarriage. When the miscarriage did not complete after a few days, the doctors recommended an abortion. At first Ms. Eadie and Joe agreed, but after hearing a doctor say he could not understand why the baby was hanging in there, Ms. Eadie decided she did not want an abortion.
