Summary

The second chapter is titled “2005.” Three years have passed since the previous chapter. The scene opens with Jane waking up on the day before her wedding to Luke Armstrong. Duncan teasingly calls him Lance Armstrong. Jane answers the phone, and Duncan says Phyllis has been driving all over town, “Always doubling back and randomly turning down side streets” (47). Jane believes Phyllis “sort of forgets where she is sometimes” (47). Duncan is now dating Darcy, who is photographing Jane's wedding. Luke is a “very nice financial analyst” with “a million sterling qualities” (47). Jane notes 24 mason jars on the kitchen table. She and Phyllis had glued burlap, yarn, and lace onto the jars to make vases for centerpieces at the wedding reception, but Jane is disappointed in the outcome. Phyllis returns, complaining about Jane's lack of newspaper delivery. She softens the argument by handing Jane a jelly donut...
