Chapters 43-48 Summary

Amanda calls Stone Barrington in Chapter 43 to tell him that Martha McMahon is dead. Arrington and Stone drive to Amanda's country home. In the meantime, Amanda tells the police that Martha's death was an accident and probably alcohol-related. Amanda informs Stone that she will pay Martha's funeral expenses. Stone suggests that Amanda not say or do anything that would "imply a sense of guilt or liability" (197). On the way back to New York City, Arrington expresses to Stone that she thinks Amanda is lying about Martha's death.
