Lee County

Lee County is the primary setting for the novel. This is the region in Virginia where Demon is born and spends his childhood and adolescence. Throughout the novel, Demon repeatedly remarks on the small size of the county. Everyone in Lee County knows everyone else. Everyone is therefore interconnected in a way that precludes the individual's privacy and anonymity. Throughout the entirety of his coming of age, Demon has a fraught relationship with the setting.
