Summary

In Chapter 39, Demon invited Fast “to Fourth of July at June and Emmy’s,” convinced he could help Maggot (306). Fast brought a girl named Mouse. In the car, “Maggot was twitchy” (307). At the party, Demon wanted to introduce Fast to June, but he and Mouse ran off. June was preoccupied with her nurse friends. Demon also felt confused about Emmy, who was dating someone named Hammer. Demon was attached to her because of their childhood experiences.

While drinking with Fast and some other kids, Demon overheard someone talking about visiting Devil’s Bathtub (309). Mention of the place unnerved Demon.

Demon saw Emmy showing off the ring Hammer had given her. Although it was just “a birthday present,” Demon noticed how much everyone loved Hammer (312).
