Nusu Nusu
Jane's novel Nusu Nusu is a symbol of her identity. The book explores the mulatto experience throughout American history. Despite the nearly 10 years of work she has put into the project, it is rejected by her agent and editor. Jane in turn feels that the publishing industry and American society are rejecting her as a person.
Brett's House
Brett's house is symbolic of dreams. Although Lenny thinks the house is ostentatious, Jane revels in her time at the palatial home. It contains everything Jane wants for her own home, including a sprawling kitchen, countless gadgets, a large yard, a view, and a private office. However, the house is not hers. Thus, she is forced to move out when Brett returns. In turn, her dreams shatter.
