Summary

In Chapter 5, Jane insists on throwing Ruby a fancy birthday party. She hires a magician and invites Ruby’s classmates to Brett’s house. She and Lenny even splurged on an American Girl doll despite their longstanding disdain for the brand. Jane chose Addy Walker and bought Ruby a matching pinafore. Jane is disappointed when Ruby opens the presents, looking unenthused. She then finds Ruby crying alone on her bed. Ruby insists she does not want the doll, because now she will never get another one. The point of AG dolls is to collect them. She is also upset because the girls Jane invited “aren’t [her] friends” (64).
