Summary

Part III is titled America, takes place from January to November in 1953. The section opens with a quote from Aslan who says “Courage, dear heart” (199). In Chapter 28, Joy arrives home on January 9. She is determined to focus on writing to earn as much money as possible. The moment she sees Bill, Joy realizes she hates him. She begins to shout at him the moment she enters the house. Bill says Joy is not allowed to “ruin the peace and love that Renee and I have built” (201). The argument becomes physical when Bill grabs her by the throat. Renee demands they stop.
