Summary

Chapter 23 opens on December 15, 1952. Joy arrives at the house Jack and Warnie share called the Kilns. Joy describes the property and house in detail, including the green hedges that border the path to the house, a brick archway and gate leading to the house, and the dimly lit entry hall. Mrs. Miller, who is the housekeeper and cook, greets Joy. Warnie and Jack seem delighted when Joy arrives. Joy notices there are still blackout curtains on the window and a disreputable rug that has been burned by embers from the fire, both signs that the bachelors are not very interested in the appearance of their home. Joy is happy to tour the grounds immediately. She sees a pond and learns two swans are curious about visitors. Joy shouts out an introduction, calling herself Joy Davidman.
