Summary

In Chapter 5, Joy's family is still visiting in Vermont. Joy is becoming more determined to heal her marriage and take care of all God has given her – including her sons and garden. Joy had recently sent Jack a ham to help break up the monotonous diet caused by food rationing. Joy often spends time in the woods with all six children, teaching them about the food available for foraging. Joy loves the conversations with the adults. She and Eva talk about the demands of a writing career, including writing things they did not want to write in order to pay the bills.
