Summary

In Chapter 16, Kyle is trying to figure out how to mend his friendship with Sam. Kyle still feels guilt, but it is weaker. Kyle tells Marley about his argument with Sam, and she says it is difficult to “be the one who messes up” (151). Marley begins to talk about Laura. Marley says that when Laura died, “I lost my voice” (151) and that she is just now finding it again with Kyle. Marley agrees to let Kyle read one of her stories if he lets her read some articles he wrote for the school paper. Thursday, Kyle goes to the cemetery and meets Sam there. They talk honestly. Kyle says it “feels wrong” to enjoy life with Marley, but that the alternative is that he and Sam will remain stuck in their grief forever.
