Summary

The novel is narrated in first-person present by two main characters, Devon and Chiamaka, who are the only Black students at their private school. Each numbered chapter is subtitled with the name of the narrator and the day of the week. Additionally, some section breaks also contain subtitles that tell the day of the week if a change in the date happens during a chapter. In the first chapter, Devon is introduced. A scholarship student from the poor side of town, Devon is happy to be starting his final year at Niveus Academy as a senior so he can leave and go to Julliard, where he is applying.
