Chapter 74, Jon Summary

Lord Janos Slynt has Jon Snow brought before him. Lord Janos tells Jon that Maester Aemon is the only thing preventing Jon from being hanged. He is sending Jon as an envoy to Mance Rayder, obstensibly to parley. Jon is to kill Mance. Jon meets with Mance, who knows the Watch is almost out of provisions. He wants the Watch to give up, as the wildings have found the Horn of Winter, which can bring the Wall down. He says the wildings do not want to conquer, they just want to get away from the Others. If the Wall comes down, there is nothing to stop the Others from coming all the way into the Seven Kingdoms. Mance offers to give the horn to the Watch if they let the wildings pass by.
