Chapter 47, Samwell and Chapter 48, Arya Summary

Sam Tarly and Gilly come on foot to an abandoned village. They sleep in the inn, but are attacked in the night by the wight of Small Paul. He stabs this with the dragonglass dagger, but it does not work on wights, only the Others. Sam manages to get an ember from the fire and kill the wight. He goes outside and sees Gilly surrounded by wights. They are the spirits of the Night's Watch men who fell in the battle with the Others. A raven comes and tells Sam to go, while thousands more land in the trees. They run and met a cloaked person who tells Sam to come with him. When he grabs Sam, the stranger's hand is black and cold as ice.
