Buddy

Buddy is the narrative's protagonist. Even though he dies at an early point in the narrative, the memories, actions, and voice of the dogs his soul inhabits afterwards originate from the dog readers know as Buddy. Buddy belonged to Ethan, who is deceased at the start of the narrative. It is because of him that Ethan and Hannah reunite. The union of Ethan and Hannah causes Buddy to meet CJ and Gloria as CJ is Hannah's granddaughter and Gloria is CJ's mother. Buddy's soul has been in the body of previous dogs. He was Toby, Bailey, and Ellie in the past. In this narrative, he is reincarnated as Molly and Max, and he carries the name Toby, as he did at the beginning of his soul’s life, at the end of his soul’s life.
