1. What symptoms led to Carla Reed learning she had leukemia?

Carla Reed, a 30 year old kindergarten teacher, one morning awoke with a bad headache which she described as numbness. The problem worsened as time went on. Carla's symptoms were unexplainable from a medical point of view. She began to feel so fatigued that she could do little besides sleep. On some days, she had to crawl across the room because she could not walk. There were also pains deep in her bones. The pains and other symptoms waxed and waned. Although Carla had seen a doctor, there was no solid diagnosis. Eventually, it was determined that Carla had leukemia.

2. Why did Sidney Farber change professions? How might this have been a somewhat difficult adjustment?

In 1947, a pathologist named Sidney Farber, although the chief pathologist at Boston's Children's Hospital, became tired of working with the dead and never treating a live patient. Farber decided to switch professions and moved into the upstairs clinic where he would be able to work with children. This might have been a difficult move, considering he had spent so much time working with children that were not alive. Communicating and dealing with sick children could prove to be challenging.
