Lesson 1 (from Prologue-Chapter 1)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is to discuss the inequity of poverty. Poverty can be "intensified by racial disadvantages or eased by racial privileges" (22). Poor white families suffer less from poverty than do Black and Hispanic Americans.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Why did Desmond state that poverty was not an equalizer? How had he seen poverty "intensified by racial disadvantages or erased by racial privileges" (22)? How was poverty different among whites, Asian Americans, Blacks, and Hispanics? How likely were Black and Hispanic Americans to be poor compared to white families? How did whites who were poor still enjoy stronger communities and advantages than Black or Hispanic families? How did personal poverty for Black or Hispanic families often reflect the poverty in the community? How did Desmond describe the inequity of poverty?
