Prologue-Chapter 1

· The following version of this book was used to create this Lesson Plan: Desmond, Matthew. Poverty, By America. Crown, 2023. Hardcover.

· In the Prologue, Desmond wrote that he needed an answer to the question, “Why is there so much poverty in America?”

· So, he wrote the book.

· For most of Desmond's adult life he had researched and reported on poverty.

· He started noticing poverty when he was a child.

· He grew up in a home that cost $60,000 a few miles outside of Winslow, Arizona, a small town east of Flagstaff.

· It was a small house surrounded by dirt and weeds.

· They moved there after his father became pastor of the First Christian Church.

· His salary was scraped from the offering plate, and was never much.

· Desmond’s father got paid less than the railroad men in town because they had a union.

· The family learned to fix things...
