1. Describe the form of "One Art."

"One Art" is a villanelle. It has 19 lines arranged in five tercets, rhymed ABA, and a quatrain rhymed ABAA. It has two refrain lines that alternate throughout the stanzas. Its dominant metrical foot is the iamb.

2. On the surface level, what is the main message of "One Art"?

"One Art" argues that learning to accept loss is an art that anyone can master. Life is full of small, inevitable losses, and practicing by accepting these can allow a person to prepare for life's larger losses.

3. Which two verb moods are used in "One Art," and where are they employed?

In "One Art," the indicative mood begins the poem, but stanzas two and three are in the imperative mood. Stanzas four and five revert back to the indicative mood, and although stanza six has one brief phrase in the imperative, it is also mostly in the indicative mood.
