The genre of Foundation and Earth is science fiction, and its setting is tens of thousands of years in the future, at a time when humanity is spread across the galaxy. The objective of this lesson is for students to understand the science fiction genre.

Lesson

1) Have students bring in examples of science fiction stories and pictures of things they associate with science fiction. At the beginning of class, have students show and explain their examples of science fiction. Discuss what makes the pictures and stories science fiction. With the class, make a list of the qualities of the science fiction genre.

2) Discuss with the class the setting of the novel, its time period, and the condition of the human race in the galaxy.
