Objective: The genre of a book is important to many people. Some only read mysteries, some only fantasy others mainstream novels. A Fire Upon the Deep belongs to the genre of Science fiction The objective of this lesson is to look at genre.

1. Homework: Have the students research the genre of science fiction, writing a short paper on it. They may answer questions such as: who were early authors. How did they influence science fiction during their era? How has the science fiction genre built upon early editions of it? Give some examples of parallels between modern science fiction and early science fiction. What are some of the differences? How does A Fire upon the Deep, differ from other science fiction novels?

2. Class discussion: Have the students identify why this book is science fiction and provide another example of a novel which would fall into this genre...
