Chapters 37 and 38 Summary

In Chapter 37, Arnie is refusing to bathe again, even though it has been two days since Arnie spent the night in the bathtub. Gilbert is trying to hook the house up to the sprinkler for Arnie to run through when Mr. Carver pulls up in his wife's station wagon and asks Gilbert to go with him. Gilbert leaves with Mr. Carver. Mr. Carver takes Gilbert to his house to show his sons how to jump on the trampoline. When the boys aren't watching Gilbert, Mr. Carver grabs and hits the boys, which sends them both in crying to their mother. As Gilbert walks the two miles home, he sees Betty Carver watching him leave from the window.
