Gym

The book opens up with Alice taking a spin class at the gym. This is where she gets into her injury which sets up the main plot of the book. Alice is surprised to find herself there because she never used to like the gym. Since the gym is at the beginning of the novel, it foreshadows how Alice discovers ways in which she has changed over the years and how she is a much different person than who she was at 29.

Hospital

Several of the first chapters take place in the hospital. This is where Alice gets diagnosed and learns about some of the major changes that happened in the last ten years, such as her divorce and custody battle with Nick.
