Summary

Chapter 29

Alice gets a call from Ben explaining that Elisabeth isn’t well. Alice thinks it’s because of her recent failed pregnancy. Ben clarifies that despite what everyone thought, Elisabeth didn’t lose the child. She’s pregnant. She’s also been up for the last two days just watching television. Alice drives over and crawls into bed with Elisabeth to watch television. It takes a little while, but Elisabeth eventually opens up. She tells Alice she wanted the pregnancy to fail because she was convinced the child would just die inside of her like all of the others. They’ve been trying for seven years, putting their lives on hold for something that seemed doomed. She says she’s too exhausted and can’t handle the idea of telling everyone she’s pregnant, only to tell them a few months later...
