Chapter 83-87 Summary
Upon returning to Washington, Cross receives a message to call Hughes's friend Tim at the San Francisco examiner. Cross immediately becomes worried about Hughes. He asks Tim is she has returned from Santa Cruz and, more importantly, if someone went with her. Tim says no on both accounts. Cross calls the local authorities in Santa Cruz. Lieutenant Conover does not appear worried. Cross finally presses him into sending out some patrol cars. He describes the vampire style murders, trying to motivate Conover into helping. Cross feels certain that Hughes is in trouble.
Cross immediately flies to California. He wonders about the Mastermind during the flight. He has not heard from him in days. He wonders, though, if the Mastermind could be on the flight with him.
