Chapter 80-82 Summary

Hughes opts to drive to Santa Cruz alone, because Tim has a prior engagement. There, the local police, who seem oblivious to the possibility of crime going on in their area, anger Hughes. Harry Conover, a lieutenant with the Santa Cruz police, assures her that there are no vampires in the area, only restless kids. She ignores all his reassurances and asks for directions to the areas where the largest groups of kids live.

Feeling very under appreciated for investigating in someone else's area, Hughes parks her car and prepares to travel the town on foot. Right away, two young men with blond ponytails approach her.
