Summary

The first chapter is titled “2002.” Jane Wilkes has been living in Boyne City for about a month. She teaches second grade in the small town and locks herself out of the house. A neighbor calls Duncan Ryfield. He owns a woodworking shop but doubles as the local locksmith. Jane believes he will have to drill out the lock on the front door, but he quickly enters through the bathroom window and opens the door from the inside. He does not charge her for the help, but she invites him to dinner. She has not had a “real conversation with a man” (4) since moving to town. She is 26-years-old and reasonably pretty.
