Chapter 56, Jon Summary

They are preparing to defend from Styr and his raiders. Jon thinks about the defenses of the castle, which are nonexistent, as the Wall was supposed to be the defense. The Watch members in the castle are trainees, older or infirm.

The wildings attack that night, and Jon shoots arrows on them from the top of the tower. Jon sees Yrgitte kill one of the Watch, but Jon cannot bring himself to fire back at her. As the wildings break through to the castle, the Watch fire powder kegs to collapse part of the Wall. Jon goes down and finds Ygritte, who has been hit with an arrow. He tells her everything will be all right. She responds that he knows nothing and dies in his arms.
