Chapters Three-Four Summary

Chapter Three. The team is up before dawn. While the others pack the gear Smith tells them that he wants to get a view from higher up to find the best way down the mountain. He goes back up to the fissure where he left Mary. He tells her to follow his team's tracks in the snow, and stay about 200 yards behind them and out of sight. He also tells her to stop at exactly 7:00 AM and wait for him. Smith then returns to the team and they start down the mountain through the trees. Although the deep snow slows them down, the team is still able to make good progress and by 7:00 AM they have gone down over 1,000 feet. Smith says that it is time they get a good look down the mountain, and the team carefully makes their way...
