Summary

In Chapter 22, Alex walks Beatrice to school the first day. When they see Mr. Alphonse on the steps, Alex makes a point of handing Beatrice an envelope containing an apology letter with instructions to hand this to her teacher. At school, she notes the honor roll. Though Alex is at the top of her class, her name appears seventh. She was told it was a clerical error, but it has not been corrected. She discovers that Sister Frances is no longer the principal, and that Mr. Alphonse has taken over until a new high school principal can be named. Beatrice had an agreement with Sister Frances for a free study period, but now finds she is forced into a calculus class even though she has already taken this as a college class through correspondence.
