Chapter Three Summary

After her encounter with Lord Damerel, Venetia tells no one of the incident. However, Damerel's return is big news in town, so conversations often turn to him. Aubrey merely mentions that it is about time that he returns to see to the affairs of his estate. Others, however, aren't so easy about his return.

Yardley tells Venetia that she must stop wandering around without a chaperon now that Damerel was back. He speaks to her as if he is correcting a child. This only proves to annoy Venetia because he thinks that he has a right to tell her what to do. Yardley still thinks that she will marry him when Conway returns, and tries to assume authority where he has none.

Oswald sees Damerel's return as a force that he could possibly protect Venetia from. He has never met Damerel...
